Thanksgiving in Illinois, Chapter 1: The Drive Out

Sunrise over eastern Colorado

It was early Tuesday morning -- 5:40 am to be exact -- when we hit the road for Illinois, on our way to spend Thanksgiving with the Wallaces. We were optimistic, excited, already tired, and the day went by splendidly. The girls were wonderful, save an early morning crying jag on Nora's part. It seems that babies would prefer to be fed when they wake up, even if it's only 5:30 and they usually don't eat until 7:00. Who knew? We had nice stops along the way, the best being at the Bass Pro Shop and Famous Dave's BBQ for dinner in Council Bluffs, Iowa. A couple more hours to Stuart, Iowa, and we were ready to stop for the night.

Our second day of traveling included one last 4-hour stretch... which by this time was about 4 hours TOO LONG. We just wanted to be there. Thankfully, we had a minimum of fussiness and arrived safely. We made it!
Grace all snuggled up in her seat. Such a trooper!

"I'm hungry!!!" A rare show of fussiness from Nora

Naptime after lunch & running around at a Burger King Playland. Playlands are essential!!!

Burning some energy at the Bass Pro Starbucks. Yum!

Fed, happy and chubby

The BEST invention of all time (next to the portable DVD player): a tray that fastens over the carseat. Brilliant!

** BTW -- I meant to add a BIG THANK YOU to my friend Emily for offering to lend us the carseat tray. Thank you thank you!!! I will surely be buying my own next time a road trip looms in my future. I believe they can be purchased from the "One Step Up" catalog. There's lots of cool stuff in there! **

this post will lead others who don't know any better to think that road trips are always blissfully pleasant. Wait until they read chapter 2, right?!?!?
