Many, many people have commented on how brave we are to go camping with the girls so young. Perhaps... but I think the better adjective is "crazy." However, our trips to the mountains have been memorable this summer, and it's gratifying to be building family traditions already.
Our trip last weekend, to Hermit Park outside of Estes Park, went very well. We camped with our good friends, the Campbells. Their kids are older (3rd-7th grade) and they were soooo good with Grace. She had the best time playing with them -- and I enjoyed not being Grace's only playmate for a couple of days! The only drawback was the cool (cold) weather. It didn't rain, thank goodness, but it was definitely chilly. Unfortunately the heater in the camper did not work on Friday, which was of course the coldest night. Phil and Stacey figured out the problem the next day and we had blessed heat on Saturday night. I think the camper heater might be my favorite invention of all time.... well, it's at least one of my top 10.
Nora was undoubtedly the most resilient and content camper of us all. She wins the Best Camper Award for 2008! Grace ran a close second, as she LOVED playing outside all day and getting filthy. It was a joy to watch her climb on rocks, play in the dirt, go "exploring," play hide-and-seek, and play in her "houses" of rock formations. What a fun time for a little girl! I'm thankful that she enjoys the outdoors so much, and even as we put the camper away for the season, we are all excited for future family camping trips.
